Assembly elections 2009: Its Deshmukh vs Chavan on television!

Posted by Liz Mathew on Thursday, October 22, 2009

Sure of returning to power in Maharashtra for the third consecutive time, a rare achievement by any state unit, Congress leaders appear to have begun showing their true colours.

The infighting and one-upmanship among its leaders, which were not very visible during the run up to the election, seem to be all out in the open now.

While former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who had to step down after the 26 November Mumbai terror attacks, refused to give credit to his predecessor Ashok Chavan, the latter claimed that it was his performance that ensured the Congress-NCP victory in Maharashtra.

Chavan told television channels in Mumbai that the performance of the coalition was better than in 2004,  When the Congress NCP alliance finished second, winning two less than the NCP.  As of this afternoon, Congress had 83 seats (both won and leading) which was much ahead of NCP, which could manage only 62.

Earlier, Deshmukh, who is currently a cabinet minister at the centre, was miffed when asked about Chavan&’s contribution to the victory. According to Deshmukh, who still nurses hopes of becoming Chief Minister, Chavan’s performance as chief minister could not be judged as he got ‘hardly got six months’ to govern the state. (However, at a television interview on Thursday he ruled out the possibilities of becoming the chief minister again).

Definitely Vilasrao Deshmukh has contributed a lot in getting the Victory. He took more rallies than any other leader in the state to campaign for. So he should be given the chair.
